Islands

An island is an apt metaphor for resilience and perseverance. These traits are applicable to my life story as well as the challenges of living on a remote barrier island.  Islands survive the forces of nature by adapting and transforming.  Through accretion and erosion, islands seek stasis with the ocean. Though these forces are elegantly appropriate for the dynamics of nature, it is now perilously evident, because of climate change, that islands will become more threatened by human activity. The metaphor becomes even more poignant given the immense stresses this places on the planet.
