Numinous Waves

Numinous is an elegant term for the spiritual in nature. The ancient Romans saw divine force and power operating in the inanimate objects and non-human phenomena around them.  As an alternative to the spirituality ascribed in religion, I explore how agnostics, pantheists and atheists use the term numinous as a way of describing an awe-inspiring experience. The Numinous Waves Series was motivated by the disaster of the BP oil spill in 2010.  As a resident of Dog Island Florida I was deeply affected by this tragedy. The imagery of dissonant waves became a cathartic metaphor for this egregious event- a sort of “revenge” of the waves.
