World of Wonders

These prints were inspired by a process of embossment I developed in the mid 80’s. My interest in three-dimensional illusion occurs regularly in my work. However, as a printmaker I felt limited by the flatness of the paper and sought dimensionality in my work. I devised a technique where I sculpted bas-relief imagery using oil clay. Once completed the bas-relief was cast in fiberglass and became a “female” mold for embossing paper. Using an etching press, special rubber blankets were used to press Kochi Japanese paper into the mold. The images allude to the indelible experience of becoming a father. Bringing children into the world comes with immense rewards but also fears for their future.
